from the President……
THANKS,
FROM LOU
Thank
you again to the speakers at our May lunch meeting. There was so
much good information that unfortunately, several people had to leave before
the end, when Pete Kennell of Computer Solutions shared an exciting concept
called Citrix, allowing remote access to any application and data via the
web. Darrell Garvey, of Lowndes Drosdick, Doster, Kantor & Reed, P.A.
did a great job updating us on forced access and thanks to Tony Buffa,
of Southeastern Telecom for helping us understand DSL, ISDN, CLECs, ILECs
and POTS!
The
strong attendance at this meeting told me that we are all interested in
changing technologies, but need more time in our day to learn about it.
(What a Catch-22!) I hope the chapter can provide more “learning lunches”
where we can network, eat lunch, AND learn something useful. If you’d
like to help shape the direction of these lunch programs, please let me
know. We’d appreciate your input.
Best
regards, Lou

Fore!
Time is drawing near for
our charity golf tournament to be held Friday June 29th at Champions Gate
to benefit Arnold Palmer Hospital for Women & Children. Hopefully
you have circled your calendar for this great event, co-sponsored by our
friends at CFCRES (Central Florida Commercial Real Estate Society).
If you have not received a brochure in the mail yet, please call me (407-420-1353),
or if you have any questions. We have also arranged for a Mears motor
coach to bring golfers to and from the course. The bus will leave
from CNL Center (at City Hall) where parking will be complimentary.
Seating is limited so please call Lou Nimkoff (407) 650-1146 for all the
details. Lou and Mez, many thanks for making those arrangements.

GETTING MORE ARMS
We'd
all like a helping hand now and then, but that's not what we're talking
about here. Until now, our Accredited Residential Managers (ARMs)
have had limited involvement in IREM, due to restrictions placed upon us
by the National Association of Realtors (NAR). Due to the restructuring
in IREM, which was approved by NAR, effective January 1, 2002, ARMs will
become full, voting members of IREM. They will also be required to
join their local chapter. Therefore, we will get more ARMs, but not
more legs. The dues for ARMs will most likely be less than dues for
CPMs and candidates recognizing the slightly reduced services offered to
ARMs, but this will not be decided until the fall. As always, comments
to the board from our ARMs is appreciated.
IREM Legislative
Update April 27, 2001
By
Chuck Mitchell
I had
the opportunity to observe the legislative process first hand in Tallahassee
for a week. Most of the elected legislators from Central Florida
have been placed in leadership positions and are very instrumental in shaping
the legislation for 2001.
The
Capitol is a very busy place during the two-month session. Well-dressed
lobbyist with cell phones line the halls of the Senate and House office
buildings. Members dash from committee meeting to committee meeting.
Everyone with an agenda or cause stages a rally, display or cookout on
the plaza. All of one’s senses are simulated at the Capitol.
With
only two weeks to go in the session, it appears The Broker Lien Law may
die in the committees. This bill would have given better protection
to brokers being paid their commission in commercial deals. This
is the first year that this proposed bill has been introduced.
The
Growth Management Reform will take place this session. The House
and Senate have moved along different versions. With the heavy lobbying
from the educational and home building interests, it is impossible to determine
what the final legislation will look like.
CHAPTER OFFICERS
INVADE CONGRESS By
Lou Nimkoff, CPM, CCIM
Robin
Stinson and I represented the chapter during the May IREM Leadership &
Legislative Summit held in Washington, DC. In addition to several
exciting things happening on the IREM national level, we visited with aides
from Senators Graham and Nelson, and Representatives Keller and Foley.
There truly exists a need for IREM to put its' issues in front of our federal
officials. While a few knew about our key issues (ADA, forced access,
bankruptcy reform real estate issues, and the move by banks to become real
estate brokers and property managers), some did not, and they need to.
We manage billions of dollars of investments in their districts.
We need to do a better job of getting our message out. Your assistance
when there is a call-to-action is an important step. Please help
out when this happens.
