News
from the President…… As
you read this, Robin Stinson and I are attending the IREM National meetings
in Washington. Many changes are in store at IREM, including discussions
on allowing traditional non-members to become members of chapters.
This would mean not only would CPMs, ARMs and candidates could attend meetings,
but other property management professionals could join. How do you
feel about that? We’d like to know.
Our
May 15th luncheon will be an expanded program focusing on technology.
Since we decided to have fewer, but better, programs, I am hoping this
lunch will qualify. Please plan on staying until about 1:45 to get
the full value of the four professional speakers scheduled to speak.
Details follow in this newsletter.
As
we start to plan for next year (yes, we do it this early), I urge each
of you to get involved in our chapter. Please contact me for more
information.
Best
regards, Lou
Nimkoff, CPM, CCIM

Managing Real Estate Maintenance
Operations (MNT201) will be offered in Orlando May 15-16.
This course is designed for those individuals pursuing both the ARM and
CPM designations. Additionally, maintenance supervisors find the
information contained in the course to be very beneficial. We encourage
you to attend this course or to send your employees to sharpen their skills.
For additional information or to register for this course, please contact
Bob Collester at (407) 540-1001 or by e-mail at: admin@irem-centralfl.org.
Writing and Using Property
Management Plans (BDM602) will be held May 17-18 in Ft. Lauderdale.
For those individuals who are getting ready to prepare their management
plan, this course will teach you everything you need to know. For
additional information or to register for this course, please contact Libby
McEwen, CPM at (305) 358-1000 or by e-mail at: libby@allenmorris.com.
Friend-ly Information
At a recent IREM function someone inquired about the phaseout schedule
for refrigerants. I want to inform the membership about an EPA site
that is a good resource for that information. It is http://www.epa.gov/ozone/title6/
phaseout/hcfc.html. I welcome any questions you may have.

Our 4th Annual Golf Tournament
will be at one of Orlando’s newest courses, Champions Gate on Friday, June
29th. Champions Gate was designed by Greg Norman and is a unique
golf resort offering two eighteen hole courses. Registration begins
at 11 a.m. with a 12 noon shot gun start. Included will be hole in
one prizes, longest drive, closest to the pin, $10,000 putting contest,
and raffle prizes. A barbecue dinner will follow the tournament.
Registration forms will be mailed soon. This is an open tournament
and everyone is welcome to play.
As previously, all proceeds
will benefit the Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children and Women. Our
goal is to max (144) out the tournament. We can actually exceed that
goal this year with two courses being available. If your game is
like mine, it doesn’t really matter which course I am playing. But
what matters deeply to me is donating my time to make this tournament a
success, in turn playing a small part in helping the hospital continue
it’s good work. PLEASE mark your calendar, clear your slates and
get ready to have a good time.

IREM’S BEST-KEPT SECRET
One of the greatest tools
that IREM offers its’ members is also one of its’ least known benefits.
I’m talking about the IREM web site member-to-member forum. You have
to be a CPM, ARM, or candidate to get in, as it is in the “Members Only”
section, but once you’ve gotten your password and checked it out, you’ll
realize what great potential it has.
The forum is in essence a
posting of issues and questions relating to property management.
The topics vary from water sub-metering to software to compensation questions.
You post whatever’s on your mind and check back to see what people have
contributed. There is a relatively large database of issues posted
now, since it’s been around almost two years, so it takes a little time
if you’re looking for something of interest. This section is being
revamped in the next few months, separating issues into topical areas,
making it easier to find common interest issues. The key is to take
a few minutes and help out others with something you have experience with.
But post something you’ve been pondering, and you’ll probably get some
good feedback.
The IREM web site is at www.irem.org.
If you haven’t registered, you’ll need a password. Simply click on
“Registration” under Members Only on the left hand side, then follow the
easy directions, picking out your own user name and password. Check
it out next time you have a minute. Or a question!
