 President's Message

Dear members,

I am once again honored to have had the pleasure of representing all of you at the Legislative and Leadership Summit held recently in Washington, DC. The Central Florida chapter was well represented with five members from our chapter in attendance. Those who attended were Lou Nimkoff, Robin Stinson, Pedro Vermales, Meridythe Kanaga, and myself. Collectively, these members also represent you at many national levels including Sr. Vice President, Regional Vice President, Education Committee Vice-Chair, as well as on the ethics committee and industry standards advisory board. Many thanks to these members for the time they give and commitment they make to IREM!

Highlights from the conference include the award that was presented to our chapter!! Central Florida Chapter #60 was the recipient of the Income/Expense Analysis Chapter Promotion Award in the large chapter category for its 2005 participation in the program. Our chapter had the most submittals per member compared to any other large chapter in the country! Many thanks to everyone who submitted properties as well as a special thanks to Jim Hart of Sentry Management who made this possible with over 600 property submittals himself!

Other highlights from the conference include the adoption of a single code of ethics that will apply to CPM's, ARM's, ACM's and Associate Members. The new code will take effect at the beginning of 2007 and will hold all of our member categories that are real estate practitioners to a single code of conduct.

Changes were also made to the requirements needed to qualify for Emeritus membership status. Additional options have been developed that will enable semi-retired or long-term members with service to the institute at both the local and national levels to qualify for Emeritus status sooner than previously allowed. Please watch for additional details to see if you might qualify under the new guidelines going into effect next year!

In conclusion, I would like to encourage all of you to attend the IREM Education Conference, which will be held in Tampa, FL, October 18-21, 2006. With this conference in our own back yard, there will be many opportunities to attend governance activities, network with IREM and CCIM members, as well as attend educational sessions to learn about the latest trends, best practices in the industry, and enhance professional skills. For more information on this conference, please visit the following link.

Enthusiastically,

 IREM Fixes Things in Washington

by Lou Nimkoff, CPM- Legislative Chair

On April 26th, President Robin Stinson, CPM, RVP, led the Central Florida IREM delegation to visit our representatives on Capitol Hill. Along with 250 other IREM members on the Hill, Robin Stinson, Meridythe Kanaga, CPM, and Lou Nimkoff, CPM, visited with Representative Tom Feeney and met with representatives of Senators Bill Nelson and Mel Martinez to address problems facing our industry. Senator Nelson agreed to sign on as a co-sponsor of a bill coming out to create a federal backstop for insurance companies from natural disasters. If passed, this should ease the crisis in insurance costs for coastal states, such as Florida, but will also help other states, such as those in the Midwest deal with tornadoes and South Dakota deal with flooding. Among the other topics were banks in real estate, reducing the time period to amortize leasehold improvements, small business health plans, and private property rights.

Check out what you missed in Washington, D.C. or, if you were one of the hundreds who attended, relive the big event.

Commercial Net Lease Realty  Becomes National Retail
 Properties, Inc.

As of May 1st, Commercial Net Lease Realty has become National Retail Properties, Inc. Changing the name was an important part of Commercial Net Lease Realty’s long-term strategy to solidify their identity as the leading REIT focusing on net-leased retail properties in the United States. It identifies them as experts on retail real estate, gives credence to the size and depth of their company, and will help eliminate any marketplace confusion.
The ticker symbol remains NNN on the New York Stock Exchange, the Web site is still www.nnnreit.com, and they will remain committed to being a powerful partner for their customers and a proven investment for shareholders.

 New Name for Chapter Administrators

At the Legislative Conference in Washington, DC, the governing council adopted a universal title for what we call our Chapter Administrator. Several administrators from around the country formed a committee work group to strengthen the partnership and enhance the synergies amongst IREM staff nationally and locally, and to develop ways to better serve our members through IREM chapters and help define a professional development program for administrators. One of their tasks was to investigate the different titles that are now being used for that position. Based on their study, they came up with IREM Association Executive or IAE. Although the title adoption change was not mandatory for the chapters, our Executive Council voted to implement this title change for our chapter. The IAE plays a key role in providing continuity to our members between officer and committee changes. Thus, you will see the title change for Meridythe Kanaga, CPM, our IAE, on all future correspondence and notices.
